Richard Smith, age 100, of Pikeville, KY passed away Monday, January 29, 2018 at the Good Shepherd Community Nursing Center in Phelps, KY. Richard was born to the late Wilburn and Marcella Smith in Pike County, KY, April 25, 1917.
Besides both parents, Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Vesta Smith; one son, Wilburn Smith; brothers, Harrison Smith, Freeland Smith, Wheeler Smith, Jessie Smith, Dallas Smith, and Floyd Smith; three sisters, Minnie Casey, Bithie Stevenson, and Mary Charles; one grandson, Craig Smith; and three great grandchildren, Tagan P. Meade, Andy Smith, and Ashley Smith.
Richard is survived by two sons, Turner Smith and his wife Linda of Somerset, KY and Harold Smith of Kimper, KY; one daughter, Ella Smith and her husband, Clarence Smith of Somerset, KY; one brother, Phillip Smith; two sisters, Mollie Blankenship and Delphia Smith, eight grandchildren & seven great-grandchildren.
Richard was married to Vestie Stump Smith July 22, 1939, Vestie passed June 22, 2016 at 97 years old. Richard was a deacon since 1967, a retired coalminer, a Kentucky Colonel and a member of Edo Freewill Baptist Church. He never complained, was always happy, and had a great attitude about everything.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Thacker Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Thacker Memorial Chapel with Mike Smith and Ed Abbott officiating. Entombment will follow at the J.U. Thacker Mausoleum at Annie E. Young Cemetery in Pikeville, KY.
